WHAT TO SEE IN DONNALUCATA
In Donnalucata there is not only the sea, but there are also many interesting things to see.
What to see in Donnalucata? The historic heart of the village is via Pirandello, along which there are a large number of bars where you can enjoy expertly made granitas and restaurants with fish specialties. The symbolic monument of Donnalucata is the Santuario Madonna delle Milizie, located on the top of the hill in the Milici area. Dedicated to the Warrior Virgin, the sanctuary was built around 1091 on the site where, according to tradition, an epic battle was fought between the Normans led by Ruggero d'Altavilla (Christians) and the Arab legions of the Emir Belcàne, miraculously resolved in favor of the Christians thanks to the intervention of the Virgin. The sanctuary, destroyed by an earthquake in 1693, was rebuilt in 1721. Of notable importance inside is the limestone statue of the Madonna with Child in her arms and a dove on the right. The bell tower, dating back to the year 800, is a rare example of Byzantine art.
DONALUCATA
Another important monument of Donnalucata is the Church of Santa Caterina da Siena, located in the historic center of the village. The religious building was built between 1878 and 1883 with blocks of light calcarenite. Also of notable interest is Palazzo Mormino Penna along via Regina Margherita, built in the nineteenth century in limestone typical of Ragusa and in neo-Gothic style. If you are a fan of Inspector Montalbano you should know that many scenes of the successful fiction were filmed in Donnalucata. In the TV series it is referred to as Marinella and its seafront is where Montalbano meets beautiful women and conducts his investigations. The splendid Palazzo Mormino Penna instead lent its interiors to the Vigata Police Station.
