The church of S. Bartolomeo di Scili is set in a medieval environment made of rocks. It is one of the oldest and most beautiful churches in Scicli. Outside the Church of San Bartolomeo, you can admire the Doric, Ionic and Corinthian orders of the facade, which are composed according to an academic canon and end with a ribbed dome. The first order has Tuscan-style columns that flank the gate with the statues of St. Peter and St. Paul. The second order houses, in the central part, the statue of the Immaculate with crown, halo, and crescent moon at her feet. Above the arch of the niche of the Immaculate, the coat of arms of the Church of S. Bartolomeo is carved. On the sides, the statues of St. Bartolomeo and St. William the Hermit. Finally, the third order houses the bell tower.
The architectural structure inside has a single nave, and shows a Latin cross plan, with the transept in a central position, the recessed chapels and the rectangular apse. The frescoes on the vault of the nave represent scenes from the life of St. Bartholomew in moments of prayer, blessing, arrest and martyrdom. The Church of St. Bartholomew preserves, inside, artistic riches that range from the 16th to the 19th century: from the frescoed ceilings, to the baroque decorations to the precious stuccos and the paintings of important artists.
The altarpiece depicts the “Martyrdom of Saint Bartholomew”, a work by Francesco Pascucci dated 1779. This canvas is framed by stuccoes made by Giovanni Gianforma (Serpotta school) in 1780, depicting God the Father among the angels; on the sides are two angels holding the head and skin of Saint Bartholomew, the crown (a sign of royalty) and the palm (symbol of the martyr's victory).
